Lesson-research: the image of the state in Tolstoy's story "Women's day"

Abstract: The article describes the progress of the Literature lesson devoted to the short story by the Russian writer T. Tolstaya Women's Day in the 11th form. Class activities include individual anticipatory task (the writer's biography), working with Ozhegov's dictionary (the meaning of the word state), group work (four groups work with the four parts of the short story). The aim of the lesson is to comprehend the means of representing the State in a particular way in the short story and to define the position of the narrator in it. Lesson conclusions: after doing the class activities the students are supposed to arrive at the conclusion that the state equals a featureless machine preventing the manifestation of genuine human qualities in the analyzed short story.
