Abstract: The essay analyzes Pushkin’s understanding of the phenomenon of time. It focuses on the ambivalence of the central image as well as accompanying motifs of the path, rider, and coachman. By the analysis of two streams of consciousness (philosophic and mundane) and two opposite trends in the poem’s vocabulary – elevated and lowered, including obscenities, ther article reveals both direct and metaphopric meaning of the text. The problem of traditionality and innovation in “The Cart of Time” is discussed through the comparison of this poem with other “road poems” writtеn by Pushkin as well as his contemporaries.
