Rudin of the 1880s: on Mamin-Sibiryak’s novel “Birthday man” (Imeninnik)

Abstract: The article focuses on D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak’s forgotten novel Birthdays ( Imeninnik ) analyzing the novel’s main narrative features, character types along with its subject matter connected with the destinies of Russian intelligentsia in the 1880s. Revealing typological and structural affinities of Birthdays with Rudin and Demons, the author considers Mamin’s position in the context of Russian classical literature and in correlation with Turgenev, Saltykov-Shchedrin and Dostoyevsky’s view on the role of intelligentsia in contemporary life and in the renewal of Russian society.
