Abstract: Dorothy Richardson‘s «Pointed Roofs» (1915), the first novel of her modernist epic cycle «Pilgrimage», is analyzed in the article. «Pointed Roofs» reveals the archetypal motif of the night sea journey, connected with the hero‘s quest. The literary allusion on the biblical story of Jonah, his journey in whаle‘s belly and his visit to the city of Nineveh to prophesy is discovered. The article concludes that the archetypal motif of the night sea journey takes on special modernist and gender significance in «Pointed Roofs».
