Abstract: The authors of the article analyze the questionnaire results of fifth-formers’ reading preferences in one of the Tomsk comprehensive schools. The questionnaire structure allowed obtaining more information about the following: the books teenagers had read during the academic year outside the school program, the favorite books, the school program books which they had read with interest, the books of leisure reading they’d like to have in the school program for reading, etc. The questionnaire also contained some questions which helped to find out if there was a need to discuss interesting books with their parents and teachers. The questionnaire made it possible to figure out the works of literature, themes and genres of literature the fifth-formers preferred to read. The article notes that teenagers don’t like everything they actually read. The fact that the most interesting books in the school program are books written for children and (or) about children is stressed. The fund of knowledge of schoolchildren’s reading preferences gives the teacher opportunity to make children’s reading interests wider, to develop the reading culture at literature lessons and in the extracurricular activity.
