Abstract: The article deals with the conceptual idea of beauty in the works of Boris Pasternak in the aspect of the ratio of form and content. The analysis is based on the lyrics of B. Pasternak, “Safe Conduct” and
the novel “Doctor Zhivago”. Revealing the specifics of the poet’s interpretation of beauty actualizes a number
of tasks. First, the psychological preconditions of perception of beauty, expressed in the artist’s sensitivity to
the world, as well as in the feeling of guilt for the woman’s fate aggravated by suffering, are demonstrated.
Secondly, the philosophical positions of the poet’s aesthetics are substantiated. It is said about the relative
intersection of the philosophy of Henri Bergson and the artistic and philosophical ideas of Pasternak as a reflection of the cultural and
historical “dialogue”, which is intuitive, not intentional. Third, the analysis of the characteristics of form and content in relation to
the category of beauty reveals the opposition between “creating” (“forming”) beauty associated with “prolific” existence and “created”
(«formed») beauty correlating with “passive” waste of life. The discovery of beauty in a recognizable image gives impulsion to creative
renewal, which enhances the vital potential and thus affirms the main value of the aesthetic principle. Fourthly, the author substantiates the interaction of the ethical and aesthetic categories in the works of B. Pasternak, and asserts the characteristic of beauty as a
derivative of ontological categories (“power” of life), not axiological ones.
