Abstract: The research object of this article is negation as a frequent operator of a natural language. The re- search is aimed at identifying the form, meaning and methods of functioning of one of the types of negation – negation-ambivalence – in the Russian language. The problem is solved by comparing standard negation and negation-ambivalence and identifying common and differential features of each of them. Based on these cha- racteristics, seven parameters of the analysis of negation are distinguished. The stability of the phenomenon is verified on A. V. Druzhinin»s texts, representing literary prose, memoirs and dramaturgy. As a result, the study has analyzed a way of reflecting reality based on a certain number of components, and the main reasons for using negation-ambivalence in the process of communication between people have been identified. The results of the study may be of interest for domestic and foreign scholars as a methodological basis for studying other types of negation. Their area of application can be various levels of teaching Russian at a higher and secondary school, including Russian as a foreign language. The following conclusions are based on the actual research results. Ne- gation-ambivalence differs from standard negation in that it can be expressed implicitly and it fully or directly corresponds to what is said. It includes antonyms, quasi-antonyms, units from antonymic fields, and a verbalized unit does not imply substitution. Negation-ambivalence is the fixation of such qualities or states of an object in which their opposite characteristics are simultaneously balanced. But this balance presupposes that only one of several scenarios will come true. Negation-ambivalence is invariably a marker of the communicative situation of choice and the borderline state of a person who is in it. As a text analysis tool, it expands the understanding of the mediated transmission of information and the semantization of extreme uncertainty.
