Abstract: The article presents an attempt to identify the typological specificity of the future electronic Great Academic Explanatory Dictionary of the Russian Language and to outline prototypes for its architecture. The currently published “Great Academic Dictionary of the Russian Language” serves as the basis for this project, but the development of the dictionary conception should take into account all previous experience accumulated by the Russian explanatory lexicography. The new dictionary is primarily aimed at describing the successive change of the Russian literary norms (language standards) within a lengthy historical period (“from Pushkin up to now”). This kind of description will help to show the dynamic unity of the Russian literary language during the period of modern history, which can be qualified as the foundation stone of the Russian cultural identity. The only way for the dictionary to reach this aim is to be based on the synthesis of lexicographic principles of normative and historical approaches. The harmonious realization of these principles was beyond the strength of traditional, “paper-based”, lexicography; however, to-day, in the current digital technological reality, the solution can be definitely found. The author of the article shows that the feature of two-dimensionality is the structural property of the dictionary that will help to consistently realize both normative-stylistic and historical description of vocabulary. The entry of such dictionary should be constructed not as a linear (textual) object, but as a ma-trix, in which the horizontal axis shows the chronological vector of description, and the vertical axis reflects the normative-stylistic one. The article presents several prototypical patterns of such two-dimensional dictionary entries and reveals the methods of ex-pression of various kinds of lexical norm dynamics – semantic, stylistic, and formal. Besides, the author gives reasons for the need to develop a number of lexicography software that may help to compile and process information for the future dictionary in an op-timal way. Among them are the following: 1) a corpus of texts serving as sources for the dictionary, 2) a database allowing to analytically present the results of corpus-based research; and 3) a lexicographic editing system that can help to form the final entry based on the database material. Finally, the author argues that the dictionary corpus and the dictionary database may be able to serve as a basis for creating a whole system of Russian explanatory dictionaries of various sizes and application areas.
