Abstract: The aim of the article is to explore the graphic novel of the French writer and painter Bettina Egger Moscow Possessed by the Devil: In the Wake of “The Master and Margarita” (Moscou endiablé, sur les traces de Maître et Marguerite, 2013), which has not been translated into Russian, from the point of view of the transformation of Bulgakov’s images in this book. Egger presents the world of Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita in its intertwining with Moscow of the 2000s, the time of the writer-researcher’s work at the Bulgakov Museum. By comparing the history of Mikhail Bulgakov and the characters of his novel, and Bettina Egger herself, the author of the article examines how the technique of transforming well-known literary images, characteristic of modern literature, is combined with the mythologization of her own personality, the personality of the writer-researcher. Through this connection, the author of the graphic novel not only represents Bulgakov’s universe, but also supplements it with elements of her own biography, which presents to the reader the world of Moscow of the early 20th century in its intertwining with the Moscow reality of the early 21st century. The genre of the graphic novel allows Egger, the author of both the text and the graphic parts, to supplement her text with a visual constituent saliently connecting two worlds and two temporal layers. As a result of the research, the author of the article argues that, taking as a basis the subgenres of the graphic novel – the biographical graphic novel and the auto-fictional graphic novel – Bettina Egger, transforming the images of Bulgakov’s novel The Master and Margarita and connecting them with the history of the people surrounding the writer and with her own history, represents the world of Moscow where the creative constituent allows the painter to overcome temporal limitations and to prove the possibility of the life of a literary work beyond time. The graphic constituent of this novel allows the author to organically connect two worlds – the real world and the fantastic one, the world of the past and the world of the present – and in their intertwining to present the figure of the artist as a timeless image symbolizing the ability for creative activity despite the difficulties encountered on his path of life.
