The Dialogue With the West: Transformation of European Characters in Russian Fantasy

Abstract: The article touches upon a problem of the elves as the most popular fantasy characters in Russian and European fantasy. In the article the most typical way of depicting non-human characters is shown. The author comes to the conclusion that the main difference between Russian and European fantasy is connected with the attitude towards non-human characters. European authors mainly pay attention to the elves. Russian writers on the contrary depict humans as the main creatures of the world. Also the author points out that Russian fantasy texts show elves in a comic way.
