Abstract: The correspondence between D. N. Ushakov and F. F. Fortunatov, published for the first time, shows milestones in the development of the Moscow Linguistic School. At the same time, the epistolary is interesting for studying the linguistic personality of Ushakov and his formation as a teacher and linguist. Unknown facts of the scholar’s work at a secondary school are presented for the first time. The texts of the letters demonstrate the confidential tone of communication (Ushakov calls Fortunatov his teacher and regrets that he left Moscow for St. Petersburg too early), the affection of the student and his reflection on the slow work with ancient Russian written texts. The letters inform about Ushakov’s search for his own path in research: from studying the Pskov Chronicle to the first lectures at the Imperial Moscow University. The letters also discuss Fortunatov’s articles and speeches and the activity of the Moscow Dialectological Commission. By the content and emotional load of the epistolary one can judge about the peculiarities of Ushakov’s linguistic personality, which was formed largely under the influence of Fortunatov. At the same time, the young scholar intuitively sensed the movement of philological thought towards the synchronic description of language and its dialectal forms and the study of the problem of normalization of literary speech and ethnology of language. The article emphasizes that as a supporter of Fortunatov’s ideas, Ushakov managed to preserve and multiply the traditions of the Moscow Linguistic School not only in the commonly accepted comparative-historical direction, but also in the innovative one – in lexicography, in the matter of unification of literary language and spelling. In conclusion it is stressed that archival materials serve as a valuable source for the historiography of Russian linguistics and can be useful to philologists, theorists and practical scholars of linguistic science, cultural studies, and teachers of the Russian language and literature.
