Abstract: The article deals with the current state of the national precedent base, which has been founded on the classical Russian literature for many years. The study employs the methods of comparative extrapolation, referring to the phenomenon of “contested territories” (the concept was introduced by Ian Rotherham) discovered during the interdisciplinary study of the science track of the topic “Materialized identity: Construction of memory in socio-economic perspective (on the example of the archaeological site Arkaim)”. The article uses the concept of “contested territory” with reference to the current state of fiction and the entry points into its space through school education. The author traces the main challenges of the modern reading culture: the range of readers’ interests covers completely different segments of the “contested territory” of literature than the usual “lists of required literature” or “lists for extracurricular reading”; navigation in the world of literature is carried out not by recommendations of teachers or librarians, but by following influencers; in the institute of literary education itself, the school subject “literature” has been marginalized due to the lack of a mandatory universal exam. The result is the departure of the classical set of quotations, information about the lives and significance of writers, even their names and titles of works from the precedent base of new generations, which has actually led to its fall. Extrapolation of the results of the analysis of the management of the territory of the memorial landscape allows the researcher to see the same problems in the management of the classical heritage in the field of literature. The rejection of the “forced indoctrination” of the classics gives rise to a number of painful consequences, among which the author notes the following: the displacement of classical literature, even in its most famous versions, from the space of remake practices, including jokes, puns, memes and other forms; the emergence of gaps in intergenerational communication; the threat of socio-cultural gaps in the processes of building national identity: the creation of conditions for filling the gaps with fragmentary generators of situational meanings that have lost their evaluative content. The discovery of the fact of the collapse of the national precedent base in terms of the presence of references to the Russian classical literature is important for the implementation of social management and requires certain institutional decisions in the field of general indoctrination of classical works of literature.
